Design images of BYD’s new compact pickup truck have been revealed through patent documents filed with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), suggesting that this model could be the pickup version of the BYD Sealion 6.
According to CarNewsChina, the new compact pickup will use a monocoque structure, similar to that of a passenger car, instead of a ladder-frame chassis like the BYD Shark 6.
With this type of construction, the new BYD pickup could become a rival to other compact car-based trucks such as the Ford Maverick, which shares its platform with the Ford Escape, and the Hyundai Santa Cruz, which is based on the Hyundai Tucson.
The four-door pickup has not yet been officially named, but it follows a similar design language to the BYD Sealion 6. From the rear doors backward, the body transitions from an SUV shape to a pickup, featuring a more conventional tray than that of the Deepal E07. The rear design includes vertical taillights connected by a slim horizontal LED light bar, as well as plastic cladding around the lower body to enhance durability and protect against scratches. The fuel filler cap is positioned on the left rear fender, while the charging port sits on the right. The new BYD pickup also comes equipped with roof racks, a roll bar, and a rearview camera.
Based on the Sealion 6 platform, the compact BYD pickup is expected to measure no more than 4,775 mm in length, 1,890 mm in width, and 1,670 mm in height—making it shorter than the BYD Shark 6 (5,457 mm) and weighing between 1,940–2,160 kg. It is also smaller than the Hyundai Santa Cruz (4,970 mm) and Ford Maverick (5,080 mm).
Power is expected to come from a hybrid or plug-in hybrid (PHEV) system, given its potential launch in Europe and Australia. It will likely share the same powertrain as the Sealion 6, which uses a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine.
