Nissan is preparing to introduce a new mid-size SUV that’s similar in size to the Pathfinder, but will be offered with both electric (EV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains.
The new model will be called the Nissan NX8, and it will be sold in China through Nissan’s joint-venture with Dongfeng Motors. Initial details were revealed through filings with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology before Nissan later released additional official information.
The Nissan NX8 will be the brand’s first model to use an 800-volt electric architecture and will support “5C” fast charging, meaning it can charge at up to five times the battery’s capacity (battery capacity figures have not yet been disclosed).
The EV version of the NX8 will be offered with either a single-motor producing 215 kW (292 PS) or 250 kW (340 PS). The PHEV version uses a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine producing 109 kW (148 PS), paired with an electric motor delivering 195 kW (265 PS).
Dongfeng Nissan currently sells China-developed models such as the N7 EV sedan and the N6 PHEV sedan, alongside global Nissan models like the Qashqai and X-Trail. The NX8 will be the first “New Energy Vehicle” (NEV) SUV from the Dongfeng Nissan joint-venture, positioned between the X-Trail and Pathfinder in the lineup.
Patent data shows the NX8 measures 4,870 mm long—190 mm longer than the X-Trail and 134 mm shorter than the Australian-market Pathfinder. However, the Pathfinder sold by Dongfeng Nissan in China is 260 mm longer than the NX8. The Nissan NX8 will also offer a 5-seat configuration.
The NX8’s exterior design aligns with the N6 and N7 models, featuring a closed-off front fascia, Nissan’s V-motion signature expressed through a light-bar, and boomerang-shaped headlights.
At the rear, it uses OLED taillights capable of displaying customizable lighting patterns. Additional features include flush door handles, an optional two-tone roof (for certain trims), and 19- or 20-inch alloy wheels depending on the version.
The NX8 is expected to come with advanced driver-assistance features such as semi-autonomous navigation-linked driving, smart parking assistance, and LiDAR to support enhanced safety technologies.
Although export plans have not yet been confirmed, Nissan has previously mentioned the possibility of selling the N6 and N7 in markets outside China. Given the higher global demand for SUVs, those markets may also include the NX8.
