Toyota may be preparing to bring the wide-tread HiLux back into the new-generation lineup, along with the possibility of reviving the GR Sport variant. The newly revealed HiLux has dropped the Rogue model that featured the wide-tread setup, as well as discontinuing the GR Sport Wide-Tread version.
However, Toyota has hinted that the wide-tread configuration could return, potentially alongside the comeback of the GR Sport Wide-Tread.
Sean Hanley, Toyota Australia’s head of sales and marketing, told Australian automotive media that we will “have to wait and see” when asked about the wide-tread’s return. Rodney Lyons, Toyota Australia’s senior product planning specialist, also left the door open, saying, “I think there’s a possibility in the future, but there’s nothing to announce at the moment.” He added that some improvements from the wide-tread model have already been incorporated into the core grades of the new-generation HiLux.
The wide-tread variants have previously performed strongly for Toyota Australia, with the GR Sport accounting for 6% of HiLux deliveries in 2025 and the Rogue making up 11%.
Until the new GR Sport is launched, the flagship of the new-generation HiLux range will be the Rugged X, equipped with Australia-developed off-road accessories.
