Isuzu Motors Limited, led by President and CEO Naohiro Yamaguchi, has officially commenced operations at its new electric vehicle (EV) development facility, "The EARTH lab.", located within the company's Fujisawa Plant in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. The new facility is designed to accelerate the development of environmentally friendly commercial vehicles and support Isuzu's long-term carbon neutrality goals.
The EARTH lab. serves as the central hub for Isuzu Group's commercial EV research and development activities. It consolidates testing and validation functions for a wide range of technologies under one roof, including battery development, electric powertrains, energy management, and thermal management systems. By integrating these capabilities into a single facility, Isuzu aims to improve product quality, shorten development cycles, and strengthen its competitiveness ahead of the expected rapid expansion of the zero-emission vehicle market after 2030.
As part of its commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, Isuzu continues to pursue its Multi-Pathway strategy, developing multiple powertrain solutions tailored to customers' operational needs while balancing economic efficiency and vehicle performance. This approach includes both battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCVs).
Construction of The EARTH lab. was first announced in November 2023 as a key element of Isuzu's strategy to enhance its EV development capabilities. One of the facility's key strengths is its ability to evaluate and validate critical vehicle systems from the earliest stages of development, including batteries, electric motors, eAxles, energy management systems, and thermal control technologies. Early-stage testing enables engineers to verify quality and performance more accurately, allowing for faster engineering decisions and the development of highly competitive electric commercial vehicles.
Beyond its R&D role, the facility has also been designed with sustainability in mind. Solar panels have been installed on both the roof and exterior walls, while a waste heat recovery system has been incorporated into portions of the building's air-conditioning system to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
The EARTH lab. is a five-story EV research and development building standing approximately 40 meters tall. It has a building footprint of around 5,900 square meters and a total floor area of approximately 27,000 square meters. The project represents an investment of approximately ¥40 billion (around US$250 million), and houses comprehensive testing and evaluation equipment for batteries, electric motors, electric drive systems, and thermal management technologies.
On June 29, Isuzu officially held an opening ceremony for the new development center, attended by the company's senior executives.
Ken Ueda, Senior Executive Officer and Executive Vice President of Engineering, said: "The EARTH lab. represents the future of Isuzu's development capabilities. The role of commercial vehicle manufacturers is becoming increasingly complex, from achieving carbon neutrality and addressing labor shortages in the logistics industry to meeting higher expectations for safety and quality, while also responding to increasingly diverse customer needs and operating environments. I hope this facility will become a center for innovation and new challenges, where Isuzu's renowned quality and reliability are combined with new technologies and value creation to deliver greater benefits for our customers and society."
