The MG U9 will initially be offered in Australia in three variants, all dual-cab 4×4 models:
-
Entry-level Explore
-
Mid-spec Explore X
-
Flagship Explore Pro
The vehicle will be priced between AUD 55,000–65,000 (approx. THB 1,148,000–1,357,000).
The Explore Pro will be the only U9 variant equipped with MG Smart Hatch, an optional feature that allows the rear window to be lowered and the partition between the tub and cabin to be folded flat, greatly extending the continuous load space. The front passenger seat can also be folded flat backwards to create an even longer flat surface.
The LDV Terron 9 doesn’t offer this function. And while the exterior looks similar, the U9 has some notable differences, such as replacing the Terron 9’s live rear axle with leaf springs with a more car-like multi-link coil-sprung independent rear suspension system. MG still claims the U9 can match the class leaders with a braked towing capacity of 3,500 kg.
At the rear, the U9 features a power tailgate with an integrated fold-down step and cupholders, similar to those on the Ford F-150 and GWM Cannon, whereas the Terron 9 has a conventional tailgate.
Inside, the U9 uses a cockpit-inspired centre console gear selector instead of the column-mounted shifter found in the LDV Terron 9.
The U9 and LDV both measure 5,500 mm in length, slightly longer than the Ford Ranger dual-cab but shorter than full-size US pickups like the Ram 1500 and Ford F-150. Both share a 2.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and a four-wheel drive system.
According to government certification documents, the U9’s maximum power output is 160 kW (218 PS) with torque figures yet to be announced, while the Terron 9 produces 163 kW (222 PS) and 520 Nm between 1,500–2,500 rpm.
